Being helpless was a pet peeve for Paul. He liked being able to control something, or at least being able to participate where he knew he was needed. This was definitely one of those times, and all he could do was bite his tongue and try not to whimper as he watched this thirteen-year-old helplessly, not moving a muscle, too frozen to do so.
But he couldn't help it. He didn't know how to fight, at all! Never in his life had Paul fought, other than with his friends, but he couldn't throw a punch at some bug that kept jumping out of the way of Ness' bat. His breath hitched, mind numb as he watched the bug turn toward him and leap. His eyes squinted shut, only to open just as something even weirder happened.
Paul's eyebrows furrowed together as Ness placed his fingers to his forehead and dropped his bat. Before he could even begin to question his antics, a spiral of colors came down on the bug like lightening and zapped it to bits—literally. His eyes stayed widened in absolute bafflement, even as he was asked if he was okay. He was stunned.
"Wh.." He narrowed his eyes at Ness. When was the kid planning on telling him about.. about these powers he had?! How was Paul supposed to even begin to trust him if he wasn't even going to inform him about the lightning he could produce from his fingers! He took a step back, his shoulders hunched. Temporarily, he forgot about Ness saving his life.
Right now, his guard was up full-force again. "I'm fine," he answered, looking Ness over cautiously before forcing his shoulders to relax. Well, Paul thought, at least these "powers" would be of some use if they ran into anymore creatures. At the same time, Paul felt even more vulnerable; he had no powers, and he couldn't even defend himself.
He stuffed one hand in the front pocket of his hoodie, hoisting the umbrella over his shoulder as he carefully passed by Ness and silently led their way further into the city. For now, he would just have to forget about the unreal powers he'd just seen, or how Ness had them, or anything pertaining to the boy. Their main focus right now was survival.

Ness stared at Paul as he passed him, then started to follow him. For some reason, he felt like the other was kind of weirded out by him. He didn't understand why though--Not many people had PSI, but all the normal people he encountered treated it like nothing. Not that they particularly saw it that often, but still. Maybe he freaked the other guy out.
He looked up at him as they walked, then looked down at his bat. "Do you think there are gonna be worse things than that here?" He asked, softly. He figured that if there was one little bug-monster like that, there'd be plenty more where that came from. He just hoped they wouldn't progress into scarier monsters. He'd fought a lot of scary things, but for some reason he had a bad feeling about this place. Like the creatures that could be here would definitely be ten times scarier than anything he'd ever seen before.

All Paul allowed himself to register was Ness' question, and the dreaded answer. Of course. It was more possible than it was impossible for their to be plenty of more creatures for them to have to face. That opened all sorts of doors and possibilities that Paul didn't want to think about. And, in spite of himself, he walked closer to Ness. Their shoulders were practically touching he was so close, and he refused to admit it was his fear making him so wary.
At least Ness had these powers. Regardless of not being able to understand these powers, or Ness at that, Paul was thankful to have Ness by his side. He pocketed both hands once he pulled his hood over his head for no particular reason, mentally talking himself out of having another cigarette as he glanced down at the umbrella he had placed in the large pocket of his hoodie. Now that he was looking at it closely, he noticed spots on it. Red spots.
There was an odd sense of calmness for Paul upon realizing the umbrella he had so far defended himself with had blood on it. Blood was the last thing he needed to worry about right now; dried blood, anyway. Dried blood of a.. possible victim of this merciless world. The only blood he had to be concerned about was his and Ness', and making sure none of it got spilled. For now, Paul had to foget about his previous life and focus on his new one.
They walked quietly down the alley, making their way into a street crossing, and into another alleyway. It was like a gigantic maze, except there was the possibility of monsters around every corner as well as dead ends. Paul came to a stop after what he guessed what ten to fifteen minutes of walking in silence when they came upon a subway station.
"It's underground, maybe there's a safe place to hide there," he suggested, trying not to sound too full of hope as he glanced over at Ness and waited for the confirmation that they should test this theory out. It was probably best if Ness led the way; Paul was older, but Ness obviously had more defensive skills than he. And that insecurity flashed in his eyes.

Ness walked alongside Paul in silence for a while. He was still wondering whether or not the other trusted him anymore because of his PSI. Maybe he should explain himself, though he never had to before. He'd forgotten it was a strange concept to some people. For him and his friends.. he was still an entirely normal boy. Maybe that was because they all knew each other.
He was brought out of his thoughts when the other stopped, and he looked at him wondering what he'd stopped for. He followed Paul's gaze and looked over at the subway station they'd finally arrived at. There were trains here? He guessed that seemed okay seeing as this was like a city and all. However, nothing really seemed all that accessible.
He looked up at Paul when he was spoken to and blinked. "Maybe." He replied, "Right now, I'm not sure if anywhere in this freak place is safe." He said and started to walk to the station. He wasn't trying to be pessimistic, as the boy was generally a very optimistic person, but at the same time he knew not to get his hopes up too often. Many events have proved that.

Paul only nodded in agreement; this new world really couldn't be trusted. But what other choice did they have? The bassist stayed close to the teenager instinctively, since he was the more powerful one after all, Paul wasn't about to deny that logic on behalf of his own ego.
As they started down the tunnel of the subway, Paul couldn't help being a little scared. He hated the dark, he hated not knowing what was in front of him, especially in this place where he had far worse things to expect than in the real world.
Surprisingly enough, the walk was less life-threatening than Paul dreaded it would be. Again, the entire time he was within a foot away from the boy, unable to help his being clingy, as he was usually like this with his best friend John, even when he wasn't terrified.
"Whatwasthat?" Paul's words ran together as fear cracked his voice and he snapped his head around in the intense darkness in search of the origin. It had sounded like the chirping, squealing noise the spider-like creature had made earlier except.. louder.
Louder as in, more than one. And more than just a few.
"Gor blimey.." He grumbled, brows raising in fear as he turned around, the lots--of dare he say more realistically, hundreds--of spiders charging at them full speed from the end of the tunnel they had entered. It looked like they would be getting to the other end faster than anticipated, if they planned on running for their lives.
No way they could beat that many creatures (Paul didn't even want to think about what others could be with them) with an umbrella, a bat, or even Ness' powers. Without hesitance, he took the teen's hand in his and began to run.

Ness trailed down alongside his new companion down the tunnel. It made him think back to when he needed to collect the eight melodies for the sound stone. In the sewer, there was a Plague Rat. Disgusting creature, and he didn't feel like anything could get that much worse than that.
Upon hearing a sound that sounded like more than one creature, Ness turned and looked about the subway area. He turned along with Paul and gasped when he saw all of the spiders heading down the tunnel. There were loads of them. He knew he couldn't count them if he sat there and was given time!
"What--" Ness began before suddenly realizing they were running. He ran quickly with the man, glancing back to watch the spiders somewhat. Would they be able to outrun them?

Paul's grip on Ness' hand stayed tight and firm as he ran, ran, and never slowed down. He'd never been so scared in his life! His head was racing—would they survive, where would they go, what would was going to happen—and his heart pounded against his ribcage as his lungs began to burn. But there was no slowing down, not until they were safe.
Suddenly, his peripheral vision caught a glint of something. He quickly jerked his head around and noticed a smaller alley down the tunnel, something he'd never seen in a subway station before. The light was no longer there but a strong feeling forced Paul to turn, running straight past the creatures as all of them continued forward, unaware of the sudden lack of target.
He continued running despite having lost the sound of the fearful creatures, panting now, only slowing to a stop once they reached a door at the dead end of the alley. It was almost like whoever owned this place, this town, had wanted him to come here; but he tried not to think about that scary possibility.
"Let's.. see what's in here," he breathed out, nodding toward the reinforced door as he balanced against the wall with one hand and caught his breath. His legs were shaking and he tried to swallow his tears and fears, tried to keep a grip on what sanity he had left. He had only been in this place for a little while and he was already losing it. He knew he'd have to stay strong for both his and Ness' sake.

The young teen ran along with Paul, knowing there was nothing else he could or should do in the first place. His lungs burned and he swore he'd never run that fast before in his life, regardless of the circumstance.
When Paul turned to enter the alley, Ness went straight along with him. He wondered if the man knew just what he was doing, had a plan, or this was just something he'd done out of reflex from running. He guessed it was that last thought.
They reached the door and Ness stopped running with the other, leaning forward and placing his hands on his knees while attempting to breathe again. He looked up at Paul as he spoke.
"Ok. I can open it, if you want." He said, standing straight up again. It seemed like the man was pretty scared--and he had to admit, he was scared too, but in a place like this.. if everyone was scared, nobody got out alive. He had to remain calm for both of their sakes and figure out a way to get them both home again.

Paul merely nodded as Ness suggested he should open the door, still regaining his breath. Once his lungs had caught up with him, Paul took in a long breath before finally speaking. "Yeh, it'd probably be best, with yer.. powers 'n all."
It still sounded weird, referring to those beams of light as something that had actually happened, and could happen again at any given moment. But Ness didn't seem to have any intentions on killing him and Paul needed all the support he could get.
He took a few steps backward, clutching his umbrella as he nodded for Ness to open the door; it was hard to tell what was on the other side. Paul tried swallowing his fears, forcing his body to stop shaking at least long enough to brace himself if anything happened to jump out when the door opened.
Paul desperately hoped nothing would, though.

Ness looked back at the man and gave him a smile. It was hardly as bright and confident as his usual smiles, but it still showed bravery and that's what he was known for having. "Don't worry, if there's something scary behind the door--we can take it!" He assured him, then faced the door again. He gripped the handle, then with a grunt he pulled the door open some.
The door creaked when it opened, causing Ness to jump somewhat and before he opened it all the way, he peered in the room through the crack, making sure there wasn't anything right there that would jump out and most likely cause heart attacks in both himself and Paul.
Seeing nothing, the boy pulled open the door further--all the way, then looked back at Paul. "Looks empty to me." He told him, kind of relieved.
